Pakistan Warns of Force Against Houthi Attacks on Saudi Interests
Pakistan has condemned attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea by Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi militia, warning that any threat to Pakistani maritime interests could be met with 'lawful use of force.'
The conflict in the Middle East is escalating, and Pakistan's stance is becoming increasingly complicated. Islamabad enjoys a trade and security relationship with Saudi Arabia, but also has ties with Iran, which it has been mediating between and Washington to end the Iran war.
Pakistan's Foreign Ministry expressed its 'unwavering commitment' to the security pact it signed with Saudi Arabia last September, which includes a 'collective security' clause. This means that an attack on one country is considered an attack on both.
Analysts say Pakistan's contribution would most likely focus on protecting Saudi interests rather than joining offensive operations. Intelligence sharing, air-defense cooperation, maritime surveillance, and protecting critical Saudi infrastructure are possible ways Islamabad could support Riyadh without joining the fight.
