Pakistan's Energy Security Under Threat from Strait of Hormuz Disruptions

Pakistan's energy security is under threat due to potential disruptions in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from the Strait of Hormuz. According to a report, the country is heavily reliant on Qatar and the United Arab Emirates for LNG imports, which account for around 99% of its total LNG supply.

LNG currently contributes about 30% to Pakistan's total gas supply, primarily used for power generation, fertiliser production, and industrial consumption. The report warns that fuel price volatility and shipping uncertainties could significantly increase electricity generation costs.

Policymakers across Asia are reassessing strategies to safeguard energy and power systems amid growing geopolitical uncertainty. To strengthen long-term energy security, the report recommends faster deployment of utility-scale solar and wind projects, expansion of rooftop solar installations, and greater investment in energy storage technologies.
