Palm Oil Futures Reach New Heights Amid Global Market Volatility
Malaysian palm oil futures have been trending upward since August, breaking out of their usual range and reaching a high of 5,000 ringgit/tonne. The main contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange also breached the critical threshold of 10,000 RMB/tonne.
The price of '24-degree' palm oil in Guangdong has risen from around 8,200 RMB/tonne in early August to the 9,800 RMB/tonne range by late August. Domestic prices are closely linked to global market fundamentals due to my country's reliance on imports.
The volatility in the palm oil market can be analyzed through a supply-demand framework, with key factors including weather impacts on production, biodiesel demand influencing consumption, and Indian edible oil imports affecting exports from producing regions. Weather disruptions are expected to have a lagged impact on crop yields, with tighter long-term supply serving as a key variable influencing medium- to long-term market fundamentals.
