Palm Oil Prices Plummet as Soyoil and Crude Oil Cool
Palm oil prices in Malaysia took a hit on Friday, plummeting more than 2% as soyoil and crude oil prices cooled off. The benchmark December palm oil contract on Bursa Malaysia dropped to 4,674 ringgit per ton, a decline of 2.05%. This drop is significant, especially when considering the correlation between palm oil and soyoil prices.
The price movement is largely attributed to the weakening of soyoil prices in the US, which slid by 0.83%. As food companies often switch between edible oils, palm oil tends to follow suit, making it necessary for prices to adjust accordingly. Additionally, a stronger ringgit has made Malaysian exports more expensive for overseas buyers, prompting exporters to reconsider their pricing strategies.
Rising inventories in Malaysia and slow buying from India, the world's largest importer of palm oil, have also contributed to the downward trend. Technical analyst Wang Tao highlighted 4,732 ringgit as a key level, indicating that prices may continue to decline if this threshold is breached. The next potential price range, according to Tao, would be between 4,677-4,711 ringgit.
