Palm Oil Prices Soar Amid Indonesian Forest Fires
Palm oil prices have risen due to concerns over supply disruptions caused by forest fires in Indonesia, the world's top producer. The benchmark futures price has reached 4,975 ringgit per ton, or $1,229, after increasing by as much as 0.9% at the session peak in Kuala Lumpur.
David Ng of Iceberg X Sdn, a senior trader, attributes the move to the haze situation in Indonesia, which is getting worse, and notes that the market is concerned about the dry and hazy situation affecting output.
The haze has settled over much of Southeast Asia, disrupting harvesting activities as farm workers are drafted into firefighting efforts. The smoke and reduced sunlight can also slow palm fruit development, compounding supply concerns.
