Palworld TCG Launch Sparks Scalping Chaos as Rare Cards Hit $4,000
The Palworld Trading Card Game (TCG) has launched to widespread chaos, with rare cards selling for thousands of dollars on eBay. The Dawn of Palpagos set, which was released on July 30, saw the Cattiva Gold Soul card sell for nearly $4,000 three days before its official release. This is just one example of the scalping crisis that has plagued the TCG community for years.
According to reports, more than 3.5 million booster packs were sold in presales before the set was even available in stores. However, it's worth noting that this figure may represent wholesale channel orders rather than confirmed consumer sales. The number of cards purchased by retailers and distributors can inflate apparent popularity.
The secondary market is already showing signs of speculative buying, with some cards trading for tens of thousands of dollars. For example, the Chillet Dragon Whisperer card sold for $1,400 before launch day ended, while the Jormuntide Ignis Savage Lava Super Special Parallel sold for $1,372 in the United Kingdom.
The launch has raised concerns about supply and demand, with many fans unable to acquire cards at retail prices. The Pokemon TCG's history offers a cautionary lesson, as under-responding to secondary market inflation led to scalper networks dominating allocation at every major release. Bushiroad, the publisher of the Palworld TCG, has some experience in handling similar situations, but it remains to be seen how they will address this issue.
