Perfect Storm Hits Markets: Oil Prices Surge, AI Boom Falters
Asian markets took a hit on Friday, following a selloff on Wall Street, as a perfect storm of global events battered world markets. The resurgent Middle East war and a spike in oil prices back above $100 were compounded by growing concerns about the AI investment boom.
Tech firms were among those bearing the brunt of the selling, with Alphabet diving almost seven percent and Tesla plunging more than 14 percent due to massive capital spending drives. The big beasts, including US Magnificent Seven titans and South Korean and Japanese giants, took a hit as well, with their index shedding almost $800 billion in market value.
Analysts pointed out that expectations had risen and markets were becoming more selective, making future outcomes dependent on which businesses could translate investment into sustainable earnings growth and attractive returns on capital. The AI crisis was compounded by fresh worries about the re-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, which will again fan inflation and force banks to hike interest rates.
