Peru Cuts Ties with Iran over Hormuz Crisis

Peru's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on September 2 that the country will sever diplomatic relations with Iran. The decision is linked to the situation in the Middle East and Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, connecting Asia, Europe, and the US through its energy artery. Approximately 20% of global oil supplies and around 25% of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports pass through it.

The move does not entail the termination of consular relations between Peru and Iran. This means that while diplomatic ties are being cut, Peruvian citizens in Iran will still have access to some level of support from their government.
