Peso Plummets to Record Low Amid Middle East Tensions
The Philippine peso has hit an all-time low against the US dollar, dropping to P61.847 per USD at the close of trading this week.
This is a result of renewed hostilities in the Middle East and surging oil prices, which have weighed heavily on Asian currencies.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has been selling dollar reserves in an effort to shore up the local currency, but analysts predict that the exchange rate will remain at P62-P63 against the US dollar for the rest of the year.
