Private Sector Demands Freedom from Subsidy-Dependent Wheat Imports

The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) is facing opposition from wheat traders who demand that the federal government allow subsidy-free imports by the private sector.

Muzammil Chappal, Chairman of the Cereal Association of Pakistan (CAP), says past experience with state-managed procurement has led to financial losses and severe burden on the national exchequer.

CAP urges the federal government to honor its commitment to deregulation by allowing unrestricted private imports linked to international market trends.

The association proposes immediate permission for 2 million metric tons of wheat import, followed by an additional 2 million metric tons subject to market conditions and supply requirements.
