Petrobras' Tupi Field Hits 4 Billion Barrels of Cumulative Production
The Tupi field in Brazil's Santos Basin has reached an impressive milestone of cumulative production at 4 billion barrels of oil equivalent. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Petrobras, making it the first field in the company's 73-year history to reach this volume.
The Tupi field was the first pre-salt system to enter commercial production in 2010 and has required the development of new exploration models and pioneering technologies to operate effectively. In recent years, the asset has consistently surpassed an average daily production of 1 million barrels of oil per day (bpd), a mark first achieved in 2019.
Petrobras' Exploration and Production Director, Sylvia Anjos, assesses that 'Production in Tupi inaugurated a new era for the global oil industry.' She notes that the pre-salt layer, where the super-giant fields of Búzios and Mero are located, is characterized by large reserves, high productivity, oil with a smaller carbon footprint, and above-average efficiency.
The pre-salt layer accounts for 82% of Petrobras' total production, according to the company's Business Plan for 2026-30. The plan aims to increase oil and gas production through improved production efficiency, increased water injection efficiency, and mapping of new opportunities. With 57 production platforms operated by Petrobras, 28 are exclusively in the pre-salt layer.
