Petronet LNG Grapples with Qatar Supply Uncertainty Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Petronet LNG, India's largest importer of liquefied natural gas, is facing uncertainty regarding its supply schedule from Qatar for September. The company has not received a definitive supply plan from Qatar as ongoing force majeure linked to regional tensions persists.
The force majeure status was originally declared following damage at Qatar's Ras Laffan production facilities and has been complicated by geopolitical tensions affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. This situation has already impacted 56 of Petronet LNG's scheduled cargoes, but existing long-term contracts contain clauses allowing for delayed cargoes to be delivered by April 2028.
Despite these operational hurdles, Petronet LNG reported a consolidated net profit of ₹1,137 crore in the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. Revenue dropped sequentially by 41% to ₹5,558 crore due to lower import volumes, but the company's operating profit margin improved to 27.6%, up from 19.7% in the previous quarter.
