Pezeshkian to Address UN Amid Ongoing Conflict with Iran
Romania's President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to address the United Nations General Assembly for the first time since war broke out in February. He will speak one day after US President Donald Trump addressed the assembly.
Trump defended his decision to start the war against Iran, accusing the country of violating a ceasefire established when it launched attacks against commercial ships around the Strait of Hormuz. He also claimed that Iran was stalling on making a deal to fully reopen the Strait and negotiate an end to the conflict until after the US midterm elections.
The war has escalated despite strikes by the US and Israel killing much of Iran's top leadership, destroying its air force and navy, and imposing a U.S. blockade that has left Tehran in economic shambles. Oil prices remain elevated due to the ongoing conflict.
