Plaka Gas Explosion Investigation Focuses on Victims' Lungs and Missing Water Heater
A devastating gas explosion in Plaka on September 25th left six people dead and investigators are focusing on three key factors to determine the cause.
The Fire Service is examining toxicology and histology tests on the victims' lungs, as well as the natural gas supply pipes both above and below ground.
The investigation is also looking into the 'missing' bathroom water heater on the second floor of the building where the explosion occurred.
The natural gas network in this part of Plaka was installed in 2011, and a couple had their apartment connected to it soon after. However, initial reports suggest that the leak may not have been related to the energy-efficient fireplace or stove in the apartment.
Michail E. Avgouleas, a retired fire brigadier and court-appointed expert, notes that the official findings of forensic reports and toxicology tests will play a key role in clarifying the circumstances and causes of the explosion and fire.
