PNGRB Seeks Balance in EV, CNG, LNG Consumer Economics
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) is pushing for a level playing field across electric vehicles, compressed natural gas (CNG), and liquefied natural gas (LNG) vehicles. According to Anjani Kumar Tiwari, Member of PNGRB, this would ensure that consumer economics work for each segment.
Tiwari emphasized the importance of having a balanced framework with appropriate taxation, subsidies, infrastructure support, and policy interventions. Without parity across vehicle technologies, consumers may find it difficult to compare the true economics of different options.
The TERI-PNGRB report aims to address these gaps by identifying areas where infrastructure creation, incentives, and tax structures need alignment across fuel categories. Tiwari highlighted the role of compressed biogas (CBG) in reducing India's dependence on imported gas, with a target of setting up 5,000 CBG plants by 2030.
