Poilievre Urges Albertans to Vote Against Separation from Canada
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre addressed Albertans in Edmonton on September 29, 2026, urging them to vote against separation from Canada ahead of a provincial referendum scheduled for October 19. The vote, called by Premier Danielle Smith's United Conservative Party government, features ten questions including the final one asking if Albertans want to stay in Canada or have another binding referendum on leaving.
According to Poilievre, separatists are frustrated with the federal Liberal government rather than the country itself. He stated that 'many Albertans are legitimately frustrated that a costly and controlling, big and bossy government has gone far beyond its jurisdictional boundaries.'
Poilievre argued that the solution to Alberta's problems lies in staying within Canada, emphasizing that separation would not address issues such as economic struggles at the gas pump, grocery store, or housing market. 'Separation will not solve those problems. Becoming even more Canadian will,' he said.
