Pokémon Gold Figure Sells for $10,000

A limited-edition Pokémon gold figure has sold for ¥1.54 million, approximately $9,800. The 24-karat gold statue of Gholdengo is nearly five times more expensive than its melt value of around $2,080. SGC, a Japanese gold goods brand, created the piece for The Great Gold Exhibition.

The figure stands at 6 centimeters tall and weighs 15 grams. It features a black base with a gold nameplate and was released in conjunction with two display-only statues of Gholdengo and Pikachu.

Despite gold prices falling about 7% over the past month due to hawkish Federal Reserve signals, collectors are willing to pay a premium for scarcity and fandom rather than bullion. The Pokémon gold figure's resale prices may show how far the brand stretches gold's value.
