Poland's LNG Terminal Receives US Cargo on Ice-Class Tanker

The Świnoujście LNG terminal in Poland has been a key gateway for liquefied natural gas imports and European energy security. In April 2026, it handled a significant delivery from the United States on a tanker called Ribera del Duero Knutsen.

The vessel's arrival stood out because of its specialized design: it is an ice-class ship, capable of operating in cold conditions with reinforced structures and propulsion equipment designed for ice loads. While not an icebreaker, this type of ship can handle difficult ice conditions but may still require assistance from a dedicated Arctic icebreaker.

The tanker was initially built to navigate the Northern Sea Route from Norway's Snøhvit LNG plant to Japan, but it has since been used on Atlantic routes. Its arrival in Świnoujście highlights how specialized engineering can become part of an ordinary supply chain far from its original purpose.
