Pope Leo XIV has renewed his call for peace in Ukraine, emphasizing the broader impact of the ongoing conflict on global grain supplies. During his Sunday Angelus address, the pope highlighted how the war has disrupted Ukraine’s role as a key exporter, affecting millions who rely on its grain. He urged warring parties to facilitate safe grain transport across the Black Sea, stating, 'The daily bread of millions of people cannot be held hostage by war.'
Ukraine contributes significantly to the world’s grain market, supplying around 10 percent of global wheat, 15 percent of corn, and 13 percent of barley. The pope’s appeal underscored the humanitarian crisis extending beyond Ukraine’s borders, particularly in poorer nations dependent on these exports.
In addition to his peace appeal, Pope Leo XIV commemorated the beatification of Italian nun Maria Ignazia Isacchi, who was honored for her charitable work. The beatification ceremony took place in Mantua on October 10, 2026, with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro presiding. The cardinal praised Isacchi’s dedication to education and her resilience in founding a new religious congregation despite challenges.
