Portugal's Olive Oil Production on Track for Near-10% Growth

Olive oil production in Portugal is expected to rise by nearly 10% this year compared to last year, according to the Association of Olive Growers and Olive Oil Mills of Portugal (Olivum). The association estimates that production will reach around 177,000 tonnes, which is closer to the figures recorded in the 2024/2025 season. This growth is attributed to high temperatures that are accelerating the olive ripening period.

Goncalo Moreira, a project manager at Olivum, noted that this trend could lead some olive growers to start harvesting earlier, resulting in an early start of operations at the mills. However, he emphasized that it's still too early to draw conclusions about the season.

The association remains committed to maintaining the sector's commitment to excellent quality and reinforcing Portugal's position among the world's top producers. Despite positive outlooks for the year, Olivum is attentive to the evolution of production costs, particularly those associated with fuel. The average price of agricultural diesel rose by approximately 60% in mainland Portugal compared to the same period last season.
