PrimeEnergy vs. SandRidge Energy: Which Stock Offers Better Value?
PrimeEnergy Resources Corporation (PNRG) and SandRidge Energy, Inc. (SD) are two independent oil and gas companies with operations primarily in Texas and Oklahoma. PNRG shares have surged 23.5% over the past year, outperforming SD's 13.4% gain. However, a deeper analysis of their development programs, operating trends, and valuations is essential for making an informed investment decision.
PrimeEnergy is focusing on its development program to boost near-term production, especially after a 31.5% year-over-year decline in oil production during the second quarter of 2026. The company commenced drilling on 24 horizontal wells in Upton and Martin Counties, with first production expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. The 12 Upton County wells, where PrimeEnergy holds an average 41.8% interest, represent a core investment of $34.1 million. Overall, PNRG plans to invest $52 million in 28 horizontal wells in 2026, bringing cumulative spending for 2024-2026 to approximately $261 million. Stronger crude realizations and disciplined costs are helping offset regional gas-pricing weakness, with realized oil prices increasing to $98.85 per barrel in the second quarter of 2026 from $56.96 a year earlier.
SandRidge's Cherokee development program is driving higher production and revenues. Second-quarter production averaged 19.7 MBoe per day, up 11% year over year, with oil production rising 22%. Oil, natural gas, and NGL revenues increased 48% to $51.1 million from $34.5 million. The company is also expanding its Cherokee position through a pending bolt-on acquisition expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, adding approximately 7,000 net leasehold acres and interests in 21 wells. The acquired operated wells have an average 30-day initial production rate exceeding 2,100 BOE per day and are 58% oil.
The valuation comparison favors PrimeEnergy, which trades at a trailing 12-month enterprise value to EBITDA multiple of 3.16X, below SandRidge’s 3.64X. PNRG appears to offer a more attractive proposition for investors seeking new exposure, given its lower valuation, upcoming production additions, and strong leverage to the favorable near-term oil-price environment. SandRidge, meanwhile, continues to support its operating outlook through Cherokee production growth, improving drilling efficiency, and the pending acquisition.
