PURA's Decision Brings Decline in Connecticut Natural Gas Rates

Connecticut natural gas rates are set to decline after the Public Utilities Regulation Authority (PURA) made its final decision on Wednesday.

The move reverses a proposed rate increase of more than $6 per month by Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation (CNG), which will now see a decrease of just under $9 per month instead. Southern Connecticut Gas Company (SCG) had also requested an increase, but the actual rates will drop by $3 monthly.

Attorney General William Tong praised PURA's decision, stating that it was correct to slash the rates and prevent padded profits from being passed on to consumers. However, a spokesperson for Avangrid, CNG and SCG's parent company, expressed disappointment with the outcome, claiming that it does not resolve concerns raised by the superior court.

The decrease in natural gas rates may come as a welcome relief to many residents, particularly those who are expecting increased utility bills due to colder months and prolonged use of heating systems. As one New Haven resident noted, anything that can help lower expenses is appreciated, especially for those on tight budgets.
