Putin Tightens Energy Export Data Restrictions Amid Sanctions Fears
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a presidential decree to tighten restrictions on the disclosure of information related to energy and petroleum products. The move aims to make it more difficult for Western countries, including the United States, to enforce sanctions.
The decree imposes restrictions on the publication and use of data such as types of energy exports, prices, sellers, buyers, transport routes, and destinations. Dissemination of information is only permitted when companies involved in transactions disclose the relevant data themselves.
Russia has a history of withholding statistics, including crude oil production figures, since its 2014 annexation of Crimea. The latest move follows the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and is intended to reduce the effectiveness of Western price cap mechanisms and transaction tracking.
