Qatar LNG Crisis Hits Bangladesh Amid Ongoing Conflict
The ongoing conflict surrounding the Strait of Hormuz has led to uncertainty over Qatar's liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, putting countries like Bangladesh at risk.
Bangladesh imports LNG from two main sources: long-term contracts and the spot market. The country has agreements with Qatar and Oman, but since the war began, supplies from both countries have been disrupted.
QatarEnergy has extended its force majeure period over LNG supplies until early November, affecting buyers in Europe and Asia. Italy's energy supplier Edison has had 29 cargoes cancelled since April, including five more between late September and early November.
According to Anne-Sophie Corbeau, an expert at Columbia University's Centre on Global Energy Policy, the situation may continue for some time unless a political solution is reached. Corbeau also stated that QatarEnergy has been unable to provide any assurance about when normal LNG exports will resume.
