Qatar LNG Tanker Struck in Second Attack on Strait of Hormuz

A second tanker carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar has been struck in the Strait of Hormuz, just weeks after a similar incident. The GasLog Shanghai, managed by Monaco-based LNG shipping company GasLog, was attacked on Friday while leaving the strait. The crew is safe and accounted for.

The attack occurred near the western entrance to the strait, which is Qatar's only maritime route to international LNG markets. The country is the world's second-largest LNG exporter after Australia, shipping around 77 million tonnes per year. Almost all of this cargo transits through the Strait of Hormuz.

Jean-Christian Heintz, managing director of Switzerland-based LNG consultancy Wideangle LNG, described the incident as a 'significant setback' for Qatar's efforts to mitigate the effects of the crisis. He noted that using third-party carriers would not necessarily reduce the risk facing Qatar's LNG shipments.
