QatarEnergy Prepares Mid-October LNG Export Disruption
QatarEnergy is reportedly preparing to extend its force majeure on liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments through mid-October. According to Bloomberg News, several buyers in Europe and Asia are expecting a formal notification from QatarEnergy.
The reason behind this extension lies in the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping has slowed significantly due to escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington. The Strait is a critical waterway that Qatar's LNG exports transit through, accounting for about 20% of global LNG exports.
Force majeure clauses are typically used to free parties from liability if any failure to meet supply obligations is due to events beyond their control. In this case, the ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz could be considered an unforeseen circumstance that warrants the extension.
