QatarEnergy Pursues US LNG Deals Amid Production Shortfall
QatarEnergy is in talks with US LNG producers to secure multi-year supply agreements following attacks on its Ras Laffan facilities. The company is seeking to offset production losses, which it estimates at around 12.8 million tons per year (mt/y), due to the damage sustained during Iranian attacks in March.
The discussions reportedly include Venture Global, Cheniere, and Woodside, with QatarEnergy Trading looking to secure between 2 and 3 mt/y of LNG through 2031. This represents a shift in QatarEnergy's approach, as it previously relied on purchasing multiple US LNG cargoes from the spot market.
The company's Ras Laffan facilities were damaged during the Iranian attacks, affecting two of its 14 LNG production trains and a gas-to-liquids facility. CEO Saad Al Kaabi stated that the repair process would take three to five years, resulting in temporary losses.
