Qatari Gas Supply Restrictions Extend Pakistan's Winter Woes
QatarEnergy has extended its force majeure on LNG supplies to Pakistan until November 6, sparking concerns over gas and power supplies during the peak winter months. Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Ali Pervaiz Malik confirmed that QatarEnergy had informed Pakistan of the extension, citing disruption to LNG supplies due to the security situation around the Strait of Hormuz.
The development has raised alarms among Pakistan's energy authorities, who fear a prolonged disruption could make it difficult to secure sufficient LNG cargoes for December and January. These months typically see sharp increases in gas demand.
Pakistan is currently seeking alternative sources of LNG, considering spot-market purchases at higher prices to bridge the supply gap. Authorities are also arranging two RLNG (re-gasified liquefied natural gas) cargoes from Qatar for October.
