Qatar's LNG Exports Plummet Amid US-Iran Conflict

Qatar's liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports have been severely impacted by the US-Iran conflict, with only 18 cargoes delivered to European clients as of August, down from 509 in the same period last year. The Italian utility company Edison has been particularly affected, with QatarEnergy unable to deliver LNG cargoes to it until December, following a force majeure notification triggered by the disruptions.

Edison has already replaced 23 cancelled shipments with supplies from US suppliers, turning mainly to them to make up for missing deliveries from the Gulf. The company holds a long-term contract with QatarEnergy for the supply of 6.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year to Italy, around 10% of the country's total consumption.

With winter approaching in Europe, countries are rushing to fill their gas storages to prepare for the coldest months of the year. While Italy is confident it will meet the European Union's target for its gas buffer, several countries including Germany are struggling to secure adequate supplies.
