Rain Brings Relief to Parched Northern Victorian Crops
Farmers in northern Victoria have been waiting anxiously for rain to help their parched crops, and finally, it's arrived. On Thursday, Rob Marsden and Eddy Rovers were standing waist-deep in a grain crop under a threatening sky, watching the dark clouds roll in.
The Scepter wheat crop had benefited from a good start in May, but the rain had eased off in September, with some areas receiving less than half of the average for the month. Eddy Rovers remarked that everyone deserves a good season after the ones they've had, and the rain on Friday was a welcome relief.
The farmers have been cautious about using irrigation, as it costs around $300 per million liters, and high diesel and fertilizer prices have made them even more wary. However, global events will continue to impact grain prices, with uncertainty over exports from Russia and Ukraine contributing to stronger international prices.
