Rand Strength Fuels South Africa's Gold Rush Revival

The South African rand has been trading at a multi-month high against the US dollar, reaching ZAR15.9925 ($1.40) in August 2026.

This strength is partly due to the gold spot price hitting its highest level since mid-May 2026 on the same day, with prices reaching $4,676 an ounce.

The US Treasury's decision to increase buybacks of longer-dated securities has also contributed to a weaker US dollar, supporting the higher gold price.

Gold Fields reported a significant increase in profit for 2025, reaching $3,567.4 million, up from $1,245 million in 2024.

Juniors like West Wits Mining and Theta Gold Mines are benefiting from this environment, with the former's Qala Shallows project already delivering first ore and achieving a maiden gold pour in March 2026.
