RBI Faces Rate Hike Dilemma Amid Inflation and Oil Surge
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is facing mounting pressure to raise its repo rate as inflation and crude oil prices surge. After a period of steady rates at 5.25%, the economic landscape has shifted, with retail inflation hitting an eight-month high of 4.82% in August, exceeding the RBI's 4% target for the third consecutive month.
Adding to the challenges, geopolitical tensions in West Asia have driven Brent crude prices above $100 per barrel, raising concerns over imported inflation and a widening current account deficit. The weakening rupee and global monetary tightening have further complicated the policy outlook.
A Reuters poll suggests nearly 60% of economists expect a 25-basis-point rate hike in October. However, analysts are divided on the RBI's next move. Some advocate for a rate increase to curb inflation, while others argue for maintaining the status quo to support domestic demand ahead of the festive season.
The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is currently in a three-day meeting to deliberate on these critical issues. The decision will hinge on balancing inflation control with the need to sustain economic growth.
