Record-Braking El Niño Tests Australian Farmers' Resolve
Australian farmers are heading into spring with a mix of optimism and uncertainty. The latest crop forecast from ABARES predicts Australia's fourth-largest winter harvest on record, with 61 million tonnes of winter crops expected to be harvested.
The forecast is above the ten-year average by 16%, but regional differences can be significant. For example, conditions in Western Australia's cropping zone are opposite to those in northern NSW's graingrowing regions.
Farmers are under pressure due to protracted wars and a potentially record-breaking El Niño, which will bring drier conditions to southeast Australia and southwestern WA. The global fuel and fertiliser markets' volatility is also affecting farmers, with high prices and supply constraints limiting their ability to apply more fertiliser.
Some farmers have shifted from wheat to barley due to higher nitrogen prices and dry conditions. However, not all farmers base planting decisions on price forecasts, and some are sceptical about using ABARES forecasts for immediate decisions.
