Record-High Diesel Prices Worsen Global Economic Uncertainty
The global economy is grappling with record-high diesel prices amid ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. As of Friday morning, the average price for a gallon of diesel hovered around $6.43, according to GasBuddy. This historic increase has been fueled by continued tensions in the region, which have led to increased costs across various sectors.
The nationwide average price for a gallon of regular gas was at $4.47 as of Friday, up $1.53 since the U.S. war with Iran started. Rising prices are a concern for households reliant on heating oil, who could face winter bills more than 31% higher than last year, according to a report by the National Energy Assistance Directors Association.
Oil prices edged lower but remained above $100 a barrel as of Friday. Brent crude oil prices were around $103 per barrel, down roughly 1.3%, while WTI crude oil was trading at around $102 per barrel, down 0.4%. The price hike for diesel threatens to worsen the surge in inflation sparked by the Iran war nearly seven months ago.
