Refining America's Energy Future
U.S. President Donald Trump recently criticized oil companies for profiteering from a global shortage, highlighting the disconnect between America's growing energy independence and its reliance on foreign imports.
Austin Sidwell, a U.S. congressional candidate running in Alabama's First District, points out that the country's largest exporter of oil is actually the United States itself, surpassing Saudi Arabia and Russia. The U.S. exports around 10.7 million barrels of oil per day, more than it imports at 7.9 million barrels daily.
The real issue, Sidwell argues, lies in refining capacity. With only 132 refineries nationwide, the bulk of refinement is done abroad, leaving America's own supply and demand unmet. To address this, Sidwell advocates for tax incentives to encourage oil companies to invest in domestic refineries, rather than relying on government programs or pork projects.
