Republican operatives linked to Alberta separatist movement in push for independence
The Globe and Mail has revealed that Republican political operatives have been actively supporting Alberta’s separatist movement, offering tactical assistance to organizers pushing for the province to leave Canada. The investigation uncovered that separatist leaders even traveled to Washington D.C. to propose exchanging Alberta’s fresh water and oil royalties for American financial backing in their quest for independence.
Security experts have long warned that Alberta’s upcoming separation referendum could be exploited by foreign powers seeking to destabilize Canada. Prominent figures in U.S. President Donald Trump’s circle have openly endorsed Alberta’s secession, and the Globe’s findings suggest these groups have found willing allies among Alberta’s separatist leaders.
Additionally, CBC reporters recently linked the Rise of Alberta social media accounts to separatist leader Keith Wilson. Launched in 2025, the account has gained nearly 100,000 followers on X, spreading separatist propaganda and conspiratorial content. Analysts note that the account often frames Eastern Canadians as bureaucratic and Albertans as freedom-loving, while promoting anti-2SLGBTQ+ and anti-immigration rhetoric.
In related developments, UCP MLA Jason Stephan admitted to voting in favor of a future binding vote on Alberta’s separation. Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper weighed in, arguing against separation but acknowledging the referendum as a symbolic gesture to pressure Ottawa. Meanwhile, Premier Danielle Smith and Premier Mark Carney announced plans for a new oil pipeline, adding it to the list of national interest projects under the federal Building Canada Act.
