RI Energy Prices to Spike in October, Then Drop Again
The Rhode Island Energy company will implement a seasonal spike in electricity prices starting October 1st. This increase, however, will be mitigated by separate set of customer discounts and refunds issued by the state's regional gas cap-and-trade program.
According to calculations, the average residential electric customer can expect a monthly increase of $16.42. However, from January onwards, an additional discount of $20.45 per month for three months will reduce bills further.
The seasonal pricing is tied to increased demand and limited natural gas availability during colder months, with prices returning to lower costs in the summer. Rhode Island Energy, by law, cannot profit off electricity purchased from third-party suppliers, instead passing on the prices directly to customers after state regulatory review.
