Rhode Island drivers are paying record-high gas prices this Labor Day weekend, with the average price for regular reaching about $4.21 a gallon, according to AAA.

This is more than $1 higher than last Labor Day and up about 15 cents from a week ago. The national average is about $4.14 a gallon.

Jillian Young, director of public relations for AAA Northeast, said prices are rising at a time when they typically begin to fall. 'We see gas prices decline coming into September,' she said. However, this year crude oil prices are so high that the opposite is happening.

The Strait of Hormuz disruptions and supply pressures are contributing to higher prices, with crude oil trading around $90 a barrel.
