Ricketts Demands Fair Market Access for Nebraska Farmers Amid Trade Talks
US Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) has written to Ambassador Jamieson Greer, urging the administration to secure additional market access for US agricultural commodities and ensure China upholds its existing commitments. The letter comes ahead of trade negotiations between President Trump and Xi Jinping this week.
Ricketts emphasized that Nebraska is the nation's fifth-largest agricultural exporter, with nearly $8 billion in agricultural exports last year. The state leads the nation in beef and veal exports and is a top exporter of corn, feed grains, and soybeans.
The senator noted that China has failed to follow through on trade commitments with the US, including under the Phase One Agreement. He urged the administration to continue monitoring Beijing's purchases and ensure continued follow-through on their commitments.
Ricketts also highlighted that while China restored market access for some U.S. beef processing facilities earlier this year, many facilities are still suspended. He called for expanded market access for agriculture commodities and transparent enforcement of standards.
