Rising Gasoline Prices Defy Environmental Waivers Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Despite environmental waivers that expanded butane blending limits to lower pump costs, U.S. gasoline spot prices continued to climb in 2026. Prices rose by as much as 87-119 cents per gallon across major regional benchmarks. Shrinking national inventories and elevated crude costs pushed New York Harbor RBOB futures significantly higher.

The geopolitical landscape also played a significant role, with Middle East tensions disrupting global oil shipping routes and concerns around the Strait of Hormuz restricting crude supplies from overseas producers. U.S. Gulf Coast refiners aggressively exported gasoline to meet booming European and Latin American demand, draining domestic Atlantic Coast reserves in the process.

Refining trends and yield optimizations also contributed to the price surge, as modern refineries faced unprecedented operational friction during summer driving months. High ambient heat strained cracking units and reduced refining yield efficiency, leading facilities to favor high-margin distillates over basic gasoline blends during global supply panics.
