Iran Sees US Economic Threats as Sign of Military Failure
Iranian leaders have dismissed President Trump's threats of economic warfare as a sign that Washington has given up on military action. Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf said Trump's promise of an 'economic D-Day' shows the US cannot prevail militarily.
The statement comes after Trump wrote on Truth Social promising 'the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country.' He called on allies to stand with the US as diplomatic efforts to revive peace talks stall. A 60-day memorandum of understanding to negotiate an end to the war expired recently, and a U.S. blockade is still in place.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent threatened 'tremendous economic consequences' for any country that allows its financial institutions or businesses to provide support to Iran. He added that Iran will face the 'greatest coordinated economic isolation in the history of the world.' China, which buys 90% of Iranian oil, is seen as a key target.
