Rising Gold Prices Spark Shift Towards Lighter Jewelry Weights
The global jewelry industry is undergoing significant changes due to rising gold prices. According to a study by Marsad Al Dahab, the high cost of gold has led manufacturers and companies to redesign their products, focusing on larger visual volume and appealing designs with smaller quantities of gold.
Global demand for gold jewelry fell by 21% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year, but spending rose by 22%. The World Gold Council data shows that consumers are buying smaller weights while spending more on jewelry. This shift is evident in the Egyptian market as well, where demand fell by 13% and manufacturers are now offering lighter pieces to match consumer purchasing power.
The study notes that higher prices have pushed consumers to prioritize their budget before choosing a weight or design of jewelry. As a result, consumers are opting for smaller weights and more practical pieces without sacrificing appearance or value.
