Romania Steps Up to Support Ukrainian Grain Exports Amid Russia's Attacks
The Romanian port of Constanța is becoming a crucial alternative logistics hub for Ukrainian agricultural exports due to Russia's attacks on Ukraine's port infrastructure and agricultural sector. The situation is critical, with crop storage capacities filling up rapidly, and no export opportunities available.
A meeting between Ukraine’s Minister of Agrarian Policy Taras Vysotskyi, Deputy Minister Denys Bashlyk, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Ukraine Alexandru Victor Micula discussed expanding the logistical capacity of the Port of Constanța. The parties agreed to intensify work in several areas, including increasing checkpoints on the Ukrainian-Romanian border, expanding phytosanitary and veterinary control capacities, and making maximum use of roadstead transshipment capabilities at the port.
Romania had previously helped export Ukrainian grain, with 4 million tonnes per month transported through the country in December 2023, up to 2.8 million tonnes of which consisted of Ukrainian agricultural exports. The parties aim to restore and increase such volumes, with a focus on increasing roadstead transshipment capabilities at the port of Constanța.
