Romania's Gas Prices Soar as Opposition Demands Transparency
Romania is facing rising gas prices, and citizens are demanding transparency from Energocom. The opposition party 'Democrația Acasă' leader Vasile Kostyuk criticized the rate hike, saying it would hurt both businesses and families.
Kostyuk pointed out that in Ukraine, which is at war, gas costs about 4 lei, a regulated price, while in Romania, it's 12.5-12.7 lei when converted to their currency. Starting today, Romanians will be paying 20.3 lei.
The main factor behind the tariff revision is the increase in the purchase price of natural gas, according to NARE. They attribute this to the situation on European gas markets, rising and volatile prices, as well as the need to replenish reserves ahead of the 2026-2027 heating season.
