Venezuela's Oil Exports Stymied by Aging Port Infrastructure

Venezuela's oil production has seen an uptick in recent months, but its aging port infrastructure is holding back exports. Despite increased production and strong global demand for oil, tankers are forced to wait up to 30 days for loading due to worn-out equipment, power outages, and problems with crude quality.

The country's outdated ports can only handle around 1 million barrels per day, a far cry from the 2.5 million barrels it could export in the past when production was at its peak. The current delays are fueling disputes over vessel demurrage charges, oil quality, and tanker contamination.

The largest concentration of vessels is near the port of Jose, which handles around 70% of Venezuela's total oil exports. PDVSA and its partners have been unable to exceed export levels of 1.25 million barrels per day despite increased production and lower accumulated inventories.
