Royal Gold Sees Higher Prices for Gold, Silver, Copper
Gold, silver, and copper prices have rebounded in August after earlier declines. Several trends are expected to push their values higher in the coming months and years. One way to invest in these commodities is through Royal Gold (RGLD), a company that acquires and manages metal streams and royalty interests.
Royal Gold's model significantly reduces risks from mining, as it doesn't operate mines itself. This approach has been beneficial for shareholders, especially when considering the challenges faced by mining operations in regions with high political risks.
In its second quarter, Royal Gold reported strong financial results, including revenue growth of 56.5% to $450 million and earnings of $2.56 a share, which was 41% higher than last year's figure. The company also achieved record operating cash flow of $335.2 million.
The trends driving the prices of gold, silver, and copper include growing demand from artificial intelligence hyperscalers for copper and silver, coupled with slow new supply growth. Gold's price is influenced by macroeconomic factors such as inflation, currency movements, and monetary policy, which are currently favorable due to weaker U.S. economic data and a weakening U.S. dollar.
Many central banks have been stockpiling gold to diversify their holdings away from the U.S. dollar since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This trend is expected to continue, sending prices higher for these metals.
