Russia Blocks Ukraine Grain Exports, Threatens Global Food Security
Russia has imposed a blockade on Ukraine's grain exports in the Black Sea, threatening global food security and putting Ukraine's farmers at risk.
The move is a significant escalation of Russia's actions, which have already killed over 30 civilians and destroyed at least 50 Ukrainian cargo ships since June.
Ukraine is the world's largest exporter of sunflower seeds and oil, accounting for half of global supplies. It also exports barley, corn, and wheat, with the grain harvest expected to be around 60 million tonnes this year.
The blockade has already caused significant disruptions to Ukraine's farmers, who rely on Black Sea ports for over 90% of their agricultural product exports.
Ukraine's Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotsky estimates that the blockade could cost the country around 1-1.5% of its gross domestic product by the end of the year.
