Russia Blocks Ukraine Ports, Sparking Grain Price Fears
Ukraine's agricultural sector is facing significant losses due to Russia's blockage of ports. The situation has deteriorated since July, when Ukraine recorded 35 attacks on vessels in ports and 22 on those at sea.
Russia's attacks have disrupted exports, with Ukrainian producers already seeing a 30% decline in prices for oilseeds and grains. The country's agriculture minister estimates that direct losses for the agricultural sector could reach between $1.5 billion and $3 billion this year.
The minister also stated that alternative export routes would only be able to handle 50-55% of Black Sea ports' monthly capacity, which is around 6 million tons. This would serve as a temporary measure rather than a long-term solution.
Ukraine's government has approved adjusting minimum export prices to support farmers in the first emergency step to mitigate the effects of the situation.
