The wheat market has ended the week on a high note, despite some minor fluctuations in prices. According to data from the Chicago Board of Trade, September wheat futures closed at $6.96 per bushel on Friday, marking a weekly gain of around 3%. This brings the year-to-date increase for wheat to nearly 38%.

Experts warn that the upcoming El Niño season could lead to lower crop yields and reduced farm output, potentially driving up food commodity prices by as much as 16%. The 'Super' event is expected to have a significant impact on global grain supplies, with Brazil, Australia, India, and Southeast Asia facing the largest downside risks.

However, market watchers point out that there are substantial baseline global grain inventories in place, which could help cushion the blow of hot and dry conditions. The Ukraine-Russia conflict and war in Iran have also contributed to higher grain prices this year, as military strikes on export facilities and energy infrastructure disrupt supply chains.

Other agricultural commodities such as corn and soybeans also posted weekly gains, although the performance was mixed. Coffee futures suffered a loss of 1.17% on Friday, while September corn futures remained relatively unchanged.
