Russia Eyes Armed Grain Carriers Amid Growing Threats to Exports

Russia is exploring ways to secure its grain exports following a series of attacks on ports and ships, including arming grain carriers with machine guns and armor. According to Bloomberg, the Russian military, transportation authorities, shipowners, and grain traders are discussing the installation of large-caliber machine guns, mobile missile launchers, and anti-drone systems on dry cargo ships.

The proposal also includes having armed military personnel escort ships during the initial stage of their route through the Kerch Strait. However, after passing through the strait, the military personnel would leave the ships, taking their weapons and ammunition with them.

Some market participants question the effectiveness of these measures, arguing that retrofitting ships and providing military escorts will be too costly and may not guarantee complete protection.
